‘Primer: Elements’

October 2018

The first project review at the Royal College of Art for 18-19 was about the elements that make up the Interior.

The Project: Element

Latin elementum ‘principle, rudiment’,

The fundamental element of the interior is a space called the room. This is a space that is formed from a number of principle components, elements that have been and can be shaped in numerous ways in order to convey multiple meanings. This primer project challenged working as a group and to research an assigned principle element of the room.

From these findings each will make an element book: an undertaking that requires structure and form, along with the organisation of content. The second aspect of the project required a selection one example of the element and record it through models and drawings. The third and final part of the project asked students to individually respond to the element in some way.

The elements that will be considered were:

Wall

Floor

Ceiling

Door

Window

Column

Steps

A really successful simple project which provoked some interesting and challenging responses of often overlooked interior details which are seldom investigated in depth. We aim to collate the documents and investigations to create a resource for further research.
