Rainbow Rooms
Derry & Toms was a London department store that was founded in 1853 in Kensington High Street and was famous for its Roof Garden which opened in 1938. In 1973 the store was closed and became home to Big Biba, which closed in 1975. The site was developed into smaller stores and offices.
Harvey Goldsmith asked SJd to look into developing one of the floors of the historic building into a Music Hotel called the Rainbow Rooms, a luxury hotel, music venue and entertainment facility. The idea was inspired by New Yorks Rainbow Room , but wanted to cater for a more contemporary market and clientele.
The project contained about 30 luxury rooms, restaurants, world class live music venue, swimming pool, spa and gym.
The project remains unbuilt, unable to secure funding.
